Printers need occasional maintenance to remain in optimal working order. One of the most critical aspects of printer maintenance is cleaning the printhead. Printheads get dusty, dirty, and clogged with ink over time, requiring periodic cleaning. Some printers have automatic printhead cleaning systems, but they are only sometimes effective. You may need to clean the printhead manually to ensure printing success.
Printhead cleaning can be tricky. This step-by-step guide will explain how to unclog your Epson printhead nozzle. Follow these instructions to avoid damaging your printhead nozzles or the printer itself.
What Causes Printhead Nozzles to Clog?
Your printhead nozzles could become clogged for several different reasons. One of the most common problems is insufficient printer usage. The longer the printer sits without being used, the more likely the ink inside the printhead nozzles will dry up, potentially attracting dust that leads to a clog. You can prevent such an event by using your printer more frequently.
It also helps to run the automatic cleaning cycle at least once a month. Cleaning cartridges are available for each printer brand to clean your printhead nozzle. Manufacturers recommend using brand-name printer cartridges that match your printer's model for the best results.
Why is the Epson Printer not Printing (Printing Blank Pages) when the Ink is Full
Discovering your Epson printer is producing blank pages can be frustrating, especially when the ink cartridges appear full. While low printer ink is a common culprit for many printing issues, it's not the only explanation. One significant reason your Epson printer might be printing blank pages is clogged ink channels and printhead nozzles. If an ink channel is blocked, it can prevent ink from reaching the printhead nozzles properly. These tiny printhead nozzles deposit ink onto the paper during printing. If they become clogged with dried ink or debris, the disruption of ink flow occurs, leading to blank pages or faint prints.
But clogged printhead nozzles aren't the sole reason for an Epson printer malfunctioning in this way. Other possibilities include incorrect cartridge installation, outdated printer drivers, or a problem with the paper type or the printer settings. So, carefully check the cartridge installation, update the printer drivers, and check the printhead nozzles. If everything is set up well except the printhead nozzles, try cleaning the clogged nozzles with the right accessories.
Cleaning Your Epson Printhead: Step-by-Step Directions
Instructions may vary depending on the model, as each model has different cleaning cycles. Refer to your owner's manual for specific instructions on the printhead cleaning process.
- Run the auto-clean cycle. The first step to unclog your printhead is to run the auto-clean cycle on your printer. You may need to access the printer software on your computer to activate the cleaning cycle. Let the cleaning cycle run until complete, then attempt to print something as a test. If the printhead nozzle is still clogged, move to the next step.
- Remove the ink cartridges. Before cleaning, store them in an airtight container or Ziploc bag to prevent the ink from drying out in the printhead nozzles.
- Clean the printhead nozzles. Dampen a microfibre cloth with distilled water. Be sure to use distilled water to prevent any residue from being left behind in the printhead nozzles. Avoid using a paper towel that could leave lint on your printhead. Carefully clean your printhead with a wet cloth to remove dried ink.
- Replace the ink cartridges. Put the ink cartridges back in the printer and ensure they are ready to print.
- Run a print test. Print something to test the nozzle. If it looks right and you have no problems, you have successfully cleaned your printhead nozzle. If not, proceed to the next step.
- Repeat the cleaning process with water and Windex solution. A printhead cleaning solution can help dissolve dried ink stuck in the ink channel. Make a solution that is half distilled water, half Windex, or another glass cleaning product. Dampen a microfiber cloth with the solution and clean your printer's printhead again. Avoid using a paper towel. Replace the ink cartridges and run a print test. If the nozzle is still clogged, proceed to the next step.
- Soak the printhead. Prepare a solution of distilled water and Windex and microwave it until slightly warm. Soak your printhead nozzle in warm water for 10-15 minutes. Dry the printhead with a microfiber cloth and allow it to sit and dry completely (this may take a few hours). Replace the dry nozzle and ink cartridges and run another print test. If the printhead nozzle is still not printing correctly, contact your printhead manufacturer for assistance.

Dear Glen,
It appears that you may have adjusted the quality settings via the software. Higher quality settings can slow down the printing speed. To improve your print speed, try using a standard quality setting. Additionally, a motor issue or a dirty encoder could contribute to the slowdown and might require replacement or cleaning.
It would also be wise to contact Epson to explain your situation.

Our epsom ET-1810 has slowed down drastically
It is taking 4 to 5 minutes to print a single page
Have owned it for approximately 3 years
Any suggestions on what we can do to get it back to normal speed because when it was running it properly it was great lowest ink level is magenta which is still just over 1/4 full

Dear Stephen, It is highly possible that you need to change the print head. Print heads are semi-consumables and need periodic changes. In this case, it seems that your head has many missing nozzles.

My Epson printer prints fine in black and white, but not at all in color. The color tanks are full! After cleaning the heads three times, still no color patterns, just good patterns in black and white.
